Stephen Rogers

Stephen Rogers, 90, of Fayetteville, N.Y., died Nov. 12, 2002.

The grandfather of Peabody Main Street coordinator, Joanna Brazil, he was born in Lansing, Mich., and was a graduate of Michigan State College. He began his career in the 1930s as a sports reporter for the International News Service in Detroit and as a reporter for the Detroit Times. He was a reporter and copy editor in London and Paris and with the Newark (N.J.) Ledger, an editorial writer, city editor, and managing editor of the Long Island Daily Press.

He was named publisher of The Post-Standard in 1955 and publisher of the Herald-Journal and Herald American in 1958. He remained publisher from 1965 until 1981, when he was named president of The Syracuse Newspapers, a position he held until his death.

He was a director and past president of many organizations, including the New York State Publishers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Athenia; a daughter, Libby Cowan of Liverpool; two sons, Stephen A. of Fayetteville, N.J., and Chris of Winfield; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Friday morning at Fayetteville, N.J., with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt, N.J.
