State report gives Peabody police good marks

Peabody police chief Jeff Pohlman has announced his department had an 82 percent conviction rate in municipal court cases during 2002 (the most recent year for which the state has released statistics).

"I'm real happy with the work our officers have done," said Pohlman. "Anything over a 50 percent success rate is considered good."

Peabody police officers had a total of 243 cases where someone was charged with a crime and appeared in municipal court. Of those cases, there were 200 guilty pleas (automatic conviction), 25 diversions, 14 dismissals, and four actual trials.

Pohlman said the cases involved a variety of misdemeanor charges that occurred within the city limits. People charged with a felony or a crime outside the city are dealt with in district court.

The report was published recently in the "Annual Report of Kansas Municipal Courts."
