Spring Fling is this weekend in Florence
While spring blooms are bursting forth this week, the city of Florence will be bursting Saturday and Sunday with visitors and lots of activities.
The annual Spring Fling, a fund-raiser for the Labor Day celebration committee, has been expanded to two days and promises a lot of activities for people of all ages.
The Labor Day button contest will be held and the winner of the button design will be announced.
On Saturday, the Troy Malmgren Memorial Group car show will open at 10 a.m. on the east side of town. The corner of 8th and Barker will be barricaded and group will show off a variety of collectible vehicles.
Other events on Saturday and Sunday will take place at Veteran's Park with the American Flag mural as a backdrop.
Carnival rides and kid games will be offered from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and will begin again at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Marion County Sheriff's officers will be on hand both days to offer an "Ident-a-Kid" sign-up. On Sunday, members of the Marion County Health Department will run a car seat safety check from 2 to 6 p.m.
Folks will begin lining up at Veteran's Park at 4 p.m. Sunday for the Spring Fling "brat cookout." The menu includes bratwurst and hot dogs, baked beans, potato salad, dessert, and drink. The cost of the meal is by donation.
Musical entertainment will follow the meal and feature Bennie Holtsclaw, Cricket Ruthloff, Ray Davidson, Cheryl Doty, and others.
Organizers are encouraging folks to bring their lawn chairs and spend the afternoon. In case of inclement weather, the meal will be moved to the American Legion building across the street from Veteran's Park.
