Spring cleanup week begins April 16 in Peabody years ago

Peabody residents will have an opportunity the week of April 16 to rid themselves of the "extras" clogging basements, garages, attics, and sheds.

A roll-off container will be available at the southwest corner of the Olive and First street intersection from 4 to 8 p.m. April 16 and April 18, and from 8 to 11 a.m. April 21. Note the Dumpster only will be available for half a day on the 21st. Since that is a Saturday, the Marion County Transfer Station will close at noon that day.

Roll-off Dumpsters will be manned by Stutzman Refuse service and are only for the use of residents in the city limits of Peabody. To make use of the service residents should be prepared to show proof of residency with a driver's license or water bill stub.

Tires will be accepted at a cost of $3 each.

"We will offer curbside pickup again and residents may begin putting their items on the curb April 15," said city treasurer Stephanie Ax. "People need to remember that we initially designated curbside pickup for our disabled or senior citizens, one-person households, and citizens who do not have access to an appropriate vehicle for hauling their refuse to the roll-off Dumpster.

"This is not a mandatory service," she said. "Remember to box, bag, or bundle the items taken to the curb. They are not to be thrown loose into a heaping mound. Items piled loose at the curb will not be picked up."

Metal items should be separated from the other refuse as a different truck will pick them up. Residents should call the city office to have appliances picked up because they need special tags for disposal. All refrigerators and freezers MUST have their doors removed.

"And please remember that no construction or demolition material will be picked up or accepted at the roll-off Dumpster," Ax added. "Nor will they accept yard waste."

Yard waste may be taken to the city burn pit on South Olive. Construction and demolition materials should go to the transfer station in Marion, but residents need to call in advance, 620-382-5655.

A household hazardous waste unit will be at First and Vine from 8 to 11 a.m. April 21.
