Space for your editorial opinion
Perhaps you readers have noticed there is a major brouhaha unfolding in Florence. There has been some heavy-duty negative behavior and angry discussion amongst some of the population over there. This follows the suspension of the Florence police chief and charges being filed with the Kansas Attorney General against the mayor and city council for allegedly violating state and local statutes.
Emotional topics seem to create this kind of response in communities. In Florence I have found it's a little tough to maintain friendships with people on both sides of the issues. I have gotten several requests to "do an editorial" about one side or the other. That is not even within the realm of possibility at this point.
I think it is important for me to find out as much as I can about the facts in each case. However, it is more important that I withhold judgment and report the stories as fairly as possible. Offering an opinion based on someone else's ideas of truth in either matter would serve no one. I'm simply not going to do it.
There IS a place in this paper for an editorial comment from those of you who want me to champion your cause. It is called Letters to the Editor and each of you has the right to express your opinion there. That way you can fight your own battle, which is as it should be.
Be sure you are willing to sign your name, keep it short (400 to 500 words), do not slander anyone, and watch your language. I am willing to give you a spot to state your case. I am just not willing to state your case for you.
I'll be watching for your letters.
