Slaymaker to be inducted in Kansas Sports Hall of Fame

Peabody native Ron Slaymaker will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame Saturday at a breakfast on the Emporia State University campus.

Slaymaker is a 1954 graduate of Peabody High School. He attended ESU after high school and as a basketball standout was a three-time all conference selection. In 1960 he won the National Small College free-throw shooting title with a percentage of 90.9.

He coached the Emporia State men's basketball team from 1970 to 1998 winning 452 games. In 1986, Slaymaker was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year.

Slaymaker has represented the United States at the World University Games, the U.S. Olympic Festival, and the World's Sports Fair.

Slaymaker's mother, Florence, of Peabody will make the trip to Emporia to attend the ceremony honoring her son.

Three other Emporia State University sports figures will join Slaymaker Saturday. Former running back Brian Shay, U.S. Olympian Al Feuerback, and track and volleyball star Kathy Lou Devine will round out the inductees.

The breakfast ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. in Webb Lecture Hall at ESU's Memorial Union. Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at the ESU athletic ticket office at (620) 341-6378 or through the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame at (785) 263-7403.
