In his seventh year as Peabody-Burns head cross country coach, Tony Zappone has had few teams that rival the all-out athleticism and passion for cross country like he will have heading into the 2003 season.

"Ultimately, success in coaching is the luck of the draw, at least for me," Zappone said. "I'm fortunate to have had athletes gifted in running from a competitive standpoint. I'm not doing anything different. When you have a few really good runners it makes you look good."

Zappone's girls' squad will feature four returning state qualifiers on the roster.

The Warriors, who raised a runner-up plaque over their heads after finishing second at regional competition last season, took their opportunity to the next level at state competition, finishing fourth overall in Class 2A.

Zappone said that the genetic makeup of his runners has helped propel them to success, along side the athletes' willingness to work hard.

Senior Jena Windsor, junior Kate Topham, and sophomores Lisa Carter and Ashley Elliot return from last-season's state squad.

"They've all been running this summer," Zappone said.

Topham, daughter of Greg Topham, a former Peabody school record holder, is expected to help anchor the Warrior team, according to Zappone.

"Kate sets a good example," Zappone said. "She's a very good runner."

The youthful legs of Elliot and Carter will also be an important asset to PBHS, Zappone said.

"Ashley is definitely a strong runner," Zappone said. "Lisa was competitive as a freshman last year. She has the God-given gifts and the willingness to work hard. I didn't expect her to place at state, but she gave a great effort."

Distance specialist Nicholas Whitney, a junior ironclad, will anchor the boys' team. Whitney is coming off a qualifying performance in the Class 3A state track and field championship this past spring.

"Nicholas is a good student and has a very good work ethic," Zappone said. "I think he seems to enjoy running. I get the impression that he recognizes himself as a runner."

Zappone also said he thought Whitney had an opportunity to go to state this season.

"As far as I can look into the crystal ball, he's got a great chance," Zappone said.

Creating a stir in the boys' team this season, will be Kate Topham's brother Andrew, who, according to Zappone possesses a multitude of talent as a runner.

"He's a phenomenal runner," Zappone said. "He should do well. He has his father's genes."

Rounding out the boys' roster are sophomores Jeremy Berger and Jesse Riggs and freshman Jacob Wolf.

Zappone said Riggs could become a factor in 2003.

"He's worked hard and we'll find out where he will be," Zappone said. "He has potential to be a good runner for us."

The Warriors first meet is scheduled for Sept. 4 in Clearwater.
