School district $500 for library, reading programs years ago

Students, teachers, and staff at Peabody-Burns Elementary School got a surprise Monday when a KAKE television crew appeared at the school. Accompanying the KAKE group was John Sprague, marketing manager for EMC insurance company's Wichita division.

With the help of KAKE news anchor Susan Peters, Sprague presented PBES librarian Pam Carter and principal Ken Parry with a check for $500 to be used by the school library.

All elementary school students were invited to watch the presentation. Each received a bookmark printed "Peabody-Burns Reading Program" from Sprague's company.

They were entertained by Peters who read them a book, "We Share Everything" by Robert Munsch.

Sprague also gave the school a number of T-shirts to use as incentives for the reading program.

KAKE television and EMC have partnered to encourage elementary students to read by sponsoring the Reading Caravan program. Each month a school in the KAKE viewing area is selected to be the recipient of the $500 gift. KAKE and EMC began Reading Caravan in June of 2006.

Schools are nominated by parents, teachers, or district patrons. Selection is made based on the district's reading program, staff involvement, and overall need. Peabody-Burns Elementary School was nominated for the award by a Peabody parent.

The Reading Caravan check will be used to help fund the library and district reading program.
