School board presents awards to Hague, Jones

School board members Doe Ann Hague and Gary Jones were presented with Kansas Association of School Board boardmanship awards by superintendent Tom Alstrom at the Nov. 11 school board meeting. Jones received a Level I silver certificate and Hague received a Level II gold certificate.

The revised revitalization plan for the city of Peabody was approved on a 5-0 vote. The revision was necessary to correct minor errors in the wording of the plan.

Seniors Jay Gfeller and Mike Cullinane were present to address the board about the senior trip for the class of 2003. The students were instructed to meet with class members, prioritize the top three destination choices, and return to a future meeting with an itinerary for the board to review.

Mary Brown, PBHS principal, reviewed the video policy and requested that it be changed. Brown asked that the board approve a plan to require that the parent notification form need only be signed and returned to the high school office if the parent does not want a child to view a video.

After discussion, a motion by Gary Jones to approve the change failed on a 3-2 vote.

Superintendent Alstrom was instructed by the board to secure bids on the roof coating of the PBHS art/weight room, get bids on the replacement of the PES gymnasium curtain, arrange for the repair of a sidewalk at PES, and research upgrades to the heating system control unit at the high school.

The board held two executive sessions for the purpose of discussing matters relating to a student and for the purpose of discussing personnel.
