School board evaluates superintendent

The Peabody-Burns Unified School District board of education conducted two meetings last week. The regular monthly meeting was held Jan. 13 and a meeting for the evaluation of superintendent Tom Alstrom was held Jan. 15.

The superintendent's evaluation meeting was conducted in executive session. No action was taken.

At the regular meeting, the board heard from Alstrom on the status of district vehicles. He told how they are used by the district and reviewed their age and condition.

After discussion, the board voted 5-1 to purchase two 1999 Dodge Caravans for a cost of $11,988 each. The vehicles will be purchased from the Hambleton LaGreca dealership in Wichita. Included in the motion to purchase the vans was authorization for the superintendent to sell Suburban #31 and the Ford Aerostar #20. Duke Eldridge voted against the motion.

Peggy Phillips moved that the board accept the low bid of $49,713 for a 2003 International 65-passenger bus from Allied Bus. The motion was passed 6-0.

Superintendent Alstrom reviewed the plans for the renovation of the concession stand at the football field. Alstrom and two board members will look into the possibility of repairing the existing structure and the costs involved. They will report back to the board next month.

In other business, the board

— approved the five-year vo-tech cooperating agreement with School District 373 effective July 1, 2003.

— appointed Peggy Phillips and Gary Jones to the negotiating team and indicated a preference for the interest-based bargaining negotiations. Doe Ann Hague will serve as alternate.

The next regular meeting of the school board will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in the central office.
