Saturday Night in Peabody draws more than 100 visitors years ago
Guests at the Peabody Historical Society's moonlight walk Friday and Saturday nights found downtown transformed to the 1930s and 40s.
It was once again "Saturday Night in Peabody," and vintage cars lined the streets. Farmers brought their eggs and cream to town. Girls wrestled with drawing lines on their legs to simulate nylons that were no longer available due to the war. Shoppers could visit the pool hall, buy fresh produce at Huguenin's Market, pick out a hat at Miss Louck's shop, or buy a ticket and some popcorn for the Sunflower Theater's showing of "Gone With the Wind."
The Peabody Community Band, directed by Virginia Skinner, provided music from a bandstand and played old favorites such as Sousa's "Washington Post March."
Diners took advantage of the homemade soups and pies at the Morgan House during the event and by the end of the evening Saturday, soup and pies were gone.
Approximately 125 people attended the walk and event organizers are pleased with the turnout. Proceeds from the walk and food sales go to the historical society's fund to support the organization's programs and facilities.
