Sara Hollenbeck
Sara Dell Hollenbeck, 66, of Sultan, Wash., died Aug. 13, 2004.
Born Dec. 8, 1937, in Oklahoma City, Okla., she was the daughter of Dwight and Letha Hinshaw.
She was a 1955 graduate of Peabody High School and her father was owner and editor of the Peabody Gazette-Herald in the early 1950s. After her graduation, the family moved to Oregon where he purchased the newspaper in Joseph, Ore.
She attended Oregon State University majoring in education. She married Al Hollenbeck of Enterprise, Ore., and the couple moved to Sultan, Wash.
After raising her family, she continued her education by driving daily to Seattle and graduated in 1971 with a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Washington. She was a substitute teacher in the Sultan school district for a short time.
She was actively involved in fund-raising events for the Democratic party. She held various positions in the Democratic party including chairman of the 39th Legislative District Democrats.
Sara enjoyed horses and going on family horseback trips along the Cascade Crest Trail. She was a member of the Trail Dusters Chapter of Back Country Horsewomen of Washington and went on numerous rides with the group.
She and her husband planned and hosted the 1998 class of 1955 reunion in their area of Washington. They attended the 40th class reunion hosted by Jim and Pat Guthrie when class members toured areas of Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia in 1995.
Survivors include her husband, Al of Sultan, Wash.; two children, son Bryon and daughter Susan, all of Sultan, Wash.; three sisters, Nancy Pearson of Texas, Julie Mason and Katherine Hinshaw, both of Oregon; a brother, Joel Hinshaw of Oregon; and two grandsons.
A potluck celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Hollenbeck home in Sultan, Wash.
