Runaway youth apprehended

A juvenile walked away Oct. 12 from an OASIS classroom in Florence.

In the absence of a police chief, the Marion County Sheriff's Department responded to the call with a part-time Florence police officer.

Kansas Highway Patrol also assisted in the search by providing a helicopter in an attempt to locate the teenager.

Marion County Sheriff Lee Becker said the sheriff's department assisted by setting a perimeter and with the county's canine unit.

"The dog did an excellent job in tracking the individual," Becker said, when the youth was tracked by the trained dog to a rural house.

Becker said it took 15 minutes for his department to travel to Florence when contacted and was thankful everything worked out.

"For the population of Florence, they really need a police chief," Becker said, "and I'm looking forward to working with him."
