Robert MacNaughton
Robert Arthur MacNaughton, physician, rancher, and soldier, was born Oct. 16, 1926, at Port Arthur, Texas. He was the second son of Helen Reeves and David Victor MacNaughton.
He grew up in Wichita, where he attended the public school system including the University of Wichita. Pre-med was completed at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. He graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1949.
After interning at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, he was abruptly called to active duty in Korea, where he was assigned as battalion surgeon of the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Division.
His Korean ribbon holds five battle stars and two arrowheads (assault landings). He was awarded the Bronze Star with V (valor) and the Combat Medic Badge. At the Chosin Reservoir debacle, his regiment was cut off and decimated with him being the only surviving surgeon.
He volunteered for the Airborne and became a paratrooper, subsequently he was appointed regimental surgeon of the 187th Airborne RCT.
Following radiology training at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., he moved to Kansas City and practiced 37 years at St. Joseph Hospital. There he served as chairman of radiology, chief of staff, and two terms on the board of trustees. During his tenure at St. Joseph Hospital, he introduced and established nuclear medicine, diagnostic ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT), and MRI.
In 1980, he attended the Graham School for Cattlemen at Garnett, to increase his knowledge of livestock. Subsequently, he established the MacNaughton Limousin Ranch in Louisburg, which he enjoyed during his retirement from medicine. His initial herd was Angus cattle, and later he developed a registered purebred Limousin herd, including several show-ring champions.
In 1952, he married his college sweetheart, Betty D. McIntosh.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dr. David Victor.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; brother, Dr. Ralph MacNaughton of Overland Park; three children, Paula Wiley of Leawood, Dr. Bob MacNaughton of Liberty, Mo., and Julie Ann MacNaughton of Overland Park; and six grandchildren, Dan, Katie, Andy, Molly, Patrick, and Little Katie. He also is survived by an aunt, Sadie Bernhardt of Marion.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Marion Cemetery.
