Richstatter, Woodruff play in Babe Ruth Fall Classic
Coach Jonathan Richstatter and Todd Woodruff, 15, both of Peabody, were selected to participate in the sixth annual Kansas Babe Ruth Fall Classic Aug. 14-15 in Ulysses.
Woodruff was a member of the west team and Richstatter served as coach for the west team. Woodruff started out as catcher in the first game then served as second baseman in the second game.
The west team swept both games winning the first, 13-8, and the second, 13-11.
Thirty-six members of the best 15-year-old Babe Ruth players in the district were selected by the commissioner to play in the fall classic. Players were selected based on their ability, attitude, and sportsmanship. Two teams, each consisting of 18 players, are chosen by dividing Kansas down the middle to create an east and west team.
State commissioner Gary Kuntz welcomed everyone during a group meeting and introduced coaches and players. Also attending were Owen Kaufman, District 4 Babe Ruth commissioner, and David Branson, assistant state commissioner of Cal Ripkin.
