Residents dig out of arctic freezer

Marion County dodged the blizzard bullet again this past weekend with moderate winter storm conditions that could have been more severe.

Between three and six inches of snow were predicted for central Kansas, including most of Marion County.

By Sunday, more than two inches of ice pellets, sleet, and snow had fallen, causing treacherous traveling and walking. However, Marion County Sheriff Lee Becker reported there were no vehicular collisions or mishaps as a result.

State highway crews were out Friday evening and during the weekend to assure safe travel on highways. County motor grader operators cleared hard-surfaced roads Sunday and equipment operators spent part of Monday clearing county parking lots. Peabody city crews cleared streets Sunday afternoon and Monday.

While residents and workers scraped streets and sidewalks, arctic temperatures made any outdoor tasks uncomfortable. Winds caused below zero wind chills and dangerous conditions for any outdoor life.

The weather forecast for the remainder of the week was warmer temperatures and no chance of moisture — at least until the weekend.
