Removal of ice storm debris is underway

Peabody City Administrator Jeff Benbrook has announced the city is finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel with regard to piles of debris at curbsides across the community.

"We burned the first of two huge debris piles by the city park on Monday," Benbrook said. He thought the remaining pile would be burned mid-week.

"We also started curbside pickup yesterday," he said. "City crews began work on the east side and will move west across town. We expect it to take a couple of days."

He noted Kansas Department of Transportation has provided a crew and two trucks to haul debris to the burn pile.

"Hopefully we will have them around long enough to pick up everything," he noted.

He said he has remained in contact with Federal Emergency Management Assistance representatives. The city has gone out for bid on cleanup of city park.

"I'm more hopeful now about getting some funds to help pay for the cleanup," said Benbrook. "As we move through the process it looks like we will qualify for some assistance."
