Remodeling, redesign going well at Legacy Park

In the 16 months that Mid-America Health Centers, Inc., based in Wichita, has owned Legacy Park in Peabody, it has spent $250,000 to remodel the facility, Ron Leupp, administrator, said Thursday.

"We have completely redesigned the Special Care Unit for Alzheimer's patients," he said. "New furnishings. We've changed the leadership staff, and the annual survey by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment found no health-care deficiencies," Leupp said.

"That says we're doing our job. Overall, it's a different place," he said of the facility at 407 North Locust in Peabody.

"Those who were familiar with it before become immediately cognizant of the changes we've made when they enter," Leupp said.

"We've trained all of our staff on the skilled side, and this is approved by Medicare; so we can take skilled-bed patients."

People can now go to Legacy Park for a few days or weeks if they need to, in a recuperative mode, and then return home. "We've done lots of upgrading in the 16 months we've owned the place," Leupp said.

"And we've added some new services, like podiatry. This is very important for elderly patients and those who are diabetic. Dr. Weaver (a podiatrist), from El Dorado, comes here once a month," Leupp said.

He said amputations of limbs used to be the rule for people with severe diabetes, but that's no longer true, with good foot care as part of the health plan.

"We're going to continue to add services and provide residents with better care," Leupp said.

"We had an open house in June, on our one-year anniversary of operating Legacy Park. It was very well-attended, a celebration for the community. We fed more than 230 people that evening and gave tours of Legacy Park."

MAHCCI became the owner of the former Peabody Community Living Center June 1, 2002. Renamed Legacy Park, it offers long-term nursing care, Alzheimer's disease care in a special unit, and residential living apartments.
