Relay for Life raises $23,773 years ago

Supporters of the Relay for Life of Marion County raised $23,773 for the American Cancer Society.

In 2003, the event raised $15,700.

Approximately 130 walkers participated in the 12-hour marathon at Warrior Stadium, Marion.

Team members took turns walking laps, with at least one member from each team on the track during the event.

The event began at 7 p.m. Friday with cancer survivors taking a "victory lap." They were followed by those who had lost loved ones to cancer.

At 10 p.m., 1,300 luminaries were lighted and names read honoring survivors and victims of cancer.

Walkers continued their vigil throughout the night, ending at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Pizza was served, and there were drawings during the night. T-shirts were given to participants who raised $100 or more.

Co-chairmen for Marion County were Jan Helmer of Marion and Elaine Janzen of Hillsboro.

"We really appreciated the commitment and participation during the entire 12-hour period," Helmer said.

She said there were walkers who participated all night.
