Red Ribbon Week activities planned for grade school

Peabody Elementary School counselor Sally Barnaby has announced Red Ribbon Week activities this week at the grade school.

Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 24 to 31, is a nationwide program of awareness against substance abuse. The program started in Texas in 1988 and has since spread across the country.

The Red Ribbon campaign provides a forum ". . . to bring parents, schools, and businesses together — keeping kids drug and alcohol free."

Activities at PES will center on healthy activities for youngsters and take place Thursday.

"We will emphasize the importance of healthy bodies," said Barnaby. "The students will have activities from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m. on that day."

Kindergarten classes will take part in the activities held during their regular class time.

Barnaby has arranged for Marion County K-9 unit to provide a demonstration with its drug dogs, there will be a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, non-competitive games will be taught, and other activities hosted throughout the day.
