Recreation commission to sponsor kids' games 4th of July
From roller blade races to mud tug-of-war, the Peabody-Burns Recreation Commission has scheduled a day of activities for the Fourth of July.
Events will start at 9 a.m. with the roller blade races and a hot shot basketball shooting contest for ages seven and older. The site for the roller blade races has not been determined but will be announced later. The hot shot basketball shooters should meet at the roundhouse at the park.
At 10 a.m. youngsters seven and older, who are interested in participating in the triathlon (swim, bike, and run), will begin competition at the pool in the city park.
Also open to those 7-year-olds and older will be water balloon volleyball at 1 p.m. Meeting place for this group will also be at the roundhouse in the city park.
Younger children (three to eight years) will be able to participate in water relays (with sponges and balloons) at 1:45 p.m. and water balloon hot potato at 2:15 p.m. Areas for these events will be set up in the vicinity of the roundhouse.
Back again this year will be the mud tug-of-war for those eight and older. Children will be divided into teams by age groups for tug-of-war competition over a mud-filled pit. Participants for this event also should meet at the roundhouse.
"We hope the kids will have fun," said recreation commission head, Russ Busenitz. "There is no charge to participate in any of the events and we have tried to have something for all ages."
