To the Editor:

I am the wife of Frank Hiebert who graduated from Peabody High School in 1940.

He was always thrilled to return to Peabody and renew old friendships. His classmates and Army buddies were of primary interest to him. I appreciated the Dec. 3, 2003, issue of the Gazette-Bulletin.

The Lord called Frank home to eternal rest on Oct. 8, 2003. I still am in contact with several of his classmates or their spouses, one of them right near here in Pocatello, Idaho.

Susan:

Thank you for sending me the Dec. 3 Peabody Gazette-Bulletin. I especially enjoyed reading page 8 — the Christmas memories.

To the Editor:

The Gazette-Bulletin for December 3, 2003, is on my desk and I very much appreciate receiving it. My memories are quickened with reading the current activities at Peabody.

My memories of my "home town" are basically related to my four years and two weeks in high school.

Why the extra two weeks? My father died in the flu epidemic of 1918-20. He died in February 1920, leaving Mother with six children and a mortgage on the farm. Therefore the running of the farm was up to the children.

My older brother, Melvin, gave some years of good leadership on the farm, but two weeks into my sophomore year he wanted to have a period of time to accumulate some money. It was only fair that I drop out of PHS to give my brother a break.

He returned home two years later and that released me to complete my high school work.

I enjoyed my years at PHS and especially the class of 1935. We are still in communication by letter at least two times a year. Thirty-three were graduated in '35 and there are six of us living today.

Superintendent H.H. Brown was a man of high standards. He worked hard to keep tobacco off the school grounds.

Principal Paul B. Johnson was an "encourager." He was followed by Frank Leatherman who taught me algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. We were fortunate to have quality teachers.

Thanks for the picture of downtown Peabody during the Christmas season with all the Christmas lights on the buildings burning.

If we are a "part of all we meet" then the faculty and students did a lot to help shape my life in those four years at PHS.

You were very kind to share another copy of the Gazette-Bulletin with me and hope to visit Peabody again when next I drive through.
