Quilters host benefit for playground equipment

As the three-year old "Community Quilt Project" comes to end this weekend there is one final issue keeping Susie Schmidt awake at night . . . how to display almost 40 quilted items going on the auction block Saturday evening at the Peabody-Burns Elementary School multi-purpose room.

Schmidt and approximately 27 volunteers have spent the past 36 months tracing, cutting, stitching, ironing, piecing, and quilting a mountain of fabric that will be presented to the public this weekend.

"Some volunteers have come and gone," she said. "Some have been happy just to work at home. Others meet here (at Schmidt's house) and lend their talents in one way or another.

"It's been a long project, but it's something we've enjoyed doing."

Schmidt and the other volunteers will host a quilt show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and exhibit the items that will sell at the auction that night. Admission will be charged for the daytime show, but not for the evening sale.

The event will include a sewing machine raffle, door prizes, and complimentary refreshments. There also will be people on hand to take bids for anyone unable to attend the evening auction.

Marshall Auction Service of Peabody will sell the items created by Schmidt and her group of volunteers.

"We have about 10 bed-size quilts and lots of other quilted items," Schmidt said. "There will be five crib-size and several daybed-size as well as throws, two quilted tablecloths, wall hangings, pillows, table mats, and more."

Money raised Saturday will go into a fund for park and playground equipment.

"There is still some Gladys Hart money left from the initial purchase of playground equipment back in the 1970s," said Schmidt. "Other memorial money has been given from time to time, but it has never been enough to purchase any equipment.

"Maybe the Community Quilt Project will raise a sufficient amount."
