Quilt benefit raises significant amount for playground equipment

Peabody Community Quilt Project members are taking it easy for the next month or two before gearing up again for more fund-raising after the first of the year.

"By the time we totaled up all the money (from the drawing), the admission we took in for the quilt show, as well as the auction, we had right at $8,000," project director Susie Schmidt said. "There will be some expenses to come out of that, but they won't be much.

"We are delighted by the amount of support we received."

The Saturday evening auction drew about 30 active bidders as well as absentee bids from a dozen or so additional people unable to attend.

The drawing for a portable Singer sewing machine was won by Verna Mosiman. Door prizes were won by Layne Pierce, Marilyn Unruh, and Janet Post.

Members of PCQP presented Schmidt with a token of their appreciation for her firm leadership — a bull whip, which she indicated she would treasure forever.

Twenty-seven volunteers spent about three years putting together the 34 items that were sold. Not everyone attended every session or worked on every piece. Some of them did the marking, cutting, or pressing while others worked on piecing or quilting.

"When we first started part of the idea was to teach some of our beginners how to quilt," Schmidt said. "That sort of got lost along the way. We will try to get back to the educational part when we start up again."

She said the group has not decided for sure what project it will take on next.

"It definitely will be something to support the Peabody community," Schmidt said. "We will have to see how far the money goes to meet the playground equipment needs. Maybe we will have to add more to that project.

"Plus there are a couple of small things we have talked about doing that we might be able to accomplish with just a drawing or something," she added. "There is plenty we can work on. I'm sure we will think of something."

Anyone interested in helping after the committee begins meeting again in 2008 should contact Schmidt at 983-2264. Additional donations can be made to the playground project at city park by sending checks to Schmidt at 404 N. Walnut, Peabody.
