Preserve tennis courts
To the Editor:
I am a local resident of Peabody and I have a concern that I wanted to bring to your attention.
I live at 410 N. Pine Street. My concern is about our local tennis court located by Peabody Elementary School. I just moved here six months ago and I have to say this tennis court is the nicest I have ever seen in such a small town.
Here is the problem: my children and I love to play tennis there, but this has come to a complete stop. My son and daughter are upset.
For some reason local children have been able to destroy the courts undetected. The nets are on the ground and the court is covered with rocks from the school playground 300 feet away. Also the caulking that seals the separate slabs of concrete has been pulled out.
I have witnessed children in their teens using the court to play home-run derby. They pulled the nets down so they are not in their way. I have no idea why they chose to play this game here when we have a very nice ball field just 400 feet away.
I am concerned because our local police have driven by and never seem to do anything about this behavior.
I don't know where the money came from to support this court. However, I believe if it was mine some local children would be facing some damage to public property charges.
It is a shame that this is happening. I say something now because this spring the court will be useless. It is not even usable now, with the weather the way it is.
I bring this concern to your attention because our community should know of these actions and act upon them, instead of worrying about who eats at whose house and so on.
