Preheim selected as member of Kansas JASON Argonaut club
Zachary Preheim, sixth grade student at Peabody-Burns Elementary School, has been selected as a member of the Kansas JASON Argonaut Club. He is the son of Randy and Kathy Preheim. Club members will meet with Kansas scientists throughout the year and study research questions with them and other Argonauts.
The program is a new component of the Kansas JASON Argonaut Project and the Fairmount Center for Science and Mathematics Education. The project strongly believes students will have a positive life and science experience when participating in hands-on science activities and working with career scientists in their fields. It is the goal of the project to expose students to different areas of science, career scientists and the work they do, and to familiarize students with the tools scientists use to conduct their research.
Zachary applied last spring to become a member of the new club created by Amy Strong at Wichita State University. He composed two essays on what he would contribute to the team if he became a member and what area of science and technology is exciting and why. His parents and teachers wrote letters of recommendation.
Sixth grade teacher, Annette Weems, commented, "Zachary's acceptance into the Kansas Argonaut program speaks well of his perseverance. All students in our classroom will benefit from Zachary's participation in this program."
Peabody-Burns Elementary Principal Ken Parry states, "This is an honor for not only Zachary, but for our school and district as well. Our mission is to encourage our students to strive for excellence and being selected to become an Argonaut certainly falls under this mission."
