Power-lift squad brings home medals

Staff writer

A small, but mighty, squad of power-lifters from Peabody-Burns High School participated Saturday in the Dragon Power Classic at Halstead. Lifters from 11 2A-4A area schools weighed in at the meet.

All five members of the PBHS squad medaled in their divisions. Two lifters also were awarded the overall top male and female designation. The team will participate April 20 in the Heart of America League meet at Hutch Trinity.

According to lifting rules for the meet, each lifter must record weights in three classes: squats, power clean, and bench press.

Adam Jones placed first in all three lifts, earning the top male lifter overall, and receiving a plaque.

Blythe Weir placed second in all three lifts with her cumulative total, earning her the top female lifter overall. She also received a plaque.

Justin Mayfield placed first in squats, second in power clean, and fourth in bench press. Mayfield placed second in his division.

Brandon Crabtree placed second in squats, third in both power clean and bench press. He placed fourth in his division.

Josh Schmidt placed second in squats and fourth in both power clean and bench press and was fourth in his division.

"This was an awesome meet," stated Coach Chris Young. "The kids were unbelievably poised and confident. I was so proud of them."

Although Halstead was hosting the Dragon Classic for the first time, athletic director Clark Wedel said it won't be the last.

"Without a doubt, we will do this again," he said. "We were pleased with the event. It's a great way to motivate kids and a positive experience for them. We all enjoyed it."
