Poker tournament planned for July 4

Friends of Bob Phillips will host a Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament at 1 p.m. July 4 at the Peabody American Legion to raise money for a scholarship in Phillips' name.

Tim Ross, who organized the tournament remembers Phillips as a man who ". . . loved any kind of poker. Texas Hold 'Em was a favorite because Bob was such a numbers man," said Ross. "He loved the game. He didn't care how much was in the pot or how many chips where out there, he just loved the numbers."

A noon meal will precede the game, which should last about two hours, depending on how many sign up to play.

"Our intention is to be finished in time for the parade," said Ross.

A $20 donation will be collected from the players. After the pay-outs at the conclusion of the tournament, the remaining proceeds will go into the scholarship fund.

Phillips died July 7, 2007, of leukemia and heart disease.
