PHS alumni announce upcoming reunions
All-alumni open house
Pat (Thatch) Hunnell, Peabody High School class of 1955, has offered her home at 504 N. Walnut for the eighth annual alumni open house May 26.
The open house tradition (always on the Saturday evening of Memorial Day weekend) began when James and Carmen South moved back to Peabody and wanted a chance to visit with any classmates returning for Memorial Day.
The Souths were renting the "the old Stallwitz place" from Pat's sister, Juanita (Thatch) Watson who was a classmate and owned the Walnut Street house at the time.
James and Carmen invited PHS alumni who had graduated in the 1950s to spend the evening visiting and reminiscing. They continued hosting the event as long as they lived there, expanding it over the years to include alums who had graduated in the 1960s.
The Souths eventually built a home of their own and the house at 504 Walnut was rented by another classmate, Jack Kirkpatrick.
He and his wife, Kerrie, also kept up the Memorial Day weekend tradition and the group attending the event continued to grow.
"Anyone who went to school here or graduated from here is invited to attend," Hunnell said. "The crowd has continued to grow and the only requirement is a desire to see old friends, share each other's news, and have a good time."
Hunnell will not be the hostess this year although she moved to the Walnut Street house in January.
"I have to go to Texas for a graduation," she said "so I will miss it. But my sisters, Juanita and Judy (Thatch) Wetzel, will be here. I'm leaving things in their very able hands."
The open house will begin at 7 p.m. For more information contact Hunnell at 983-9151.
