Photos of old barns on display at bank
A photo survey by Janet Hamous of old barns near Peabody will be on exhibit during September at the Peabody State Bank.
Hamous did the photos for the upcoming Peabody Historical Society for Fall 2003. Unfortunately, the newsletter is printed in black and white so bank officials consented to display the pictures in full color.
One example of a barn too far gone for help was suggested by numerous people and it suggests the title "Too Late."
Some people are making a great effort to preserve their grand old barns while others simply have let time take its toll.
The changing way of life in agriculture has caused the demise of many old barns. Dr. Pat Regier said "The storm of 1990 took out many of the old barns that had been modified to fit modern equipment under cover
Stone barns have fared much better, but even those structures need constant care. The old Townsend Ranch barn, now owned by Mike Wilson, is a great example of a barn being maintained and still in use as a barn.
The old horse barn at the Lathrop ranch looks much as it must have looked years ago. The barn had a new roof and a coat of paint in recent years and only horses have lived in it.
The newsletter is scheduled to come out in late September. It will be mailed to subscribers of the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin and available to all Peabody Historical Society members.
