PES students celebrate with day of reading

Students, faculty, and staff at Peabody Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss's (Theodor Geisel) 100th birthday March 2 with a day of reading activities.

Guest readers from the community and Newton shared stories with each class.

The day began with an all-school assembly. First graders and school counselor Miss Barnaby shared a skit. While in their stocking feet, the first graders performed "The Foot Book," by Dr. Seuss. They also shared several interesting facts about Seuss's life. Principal Ken Parry read aloud, "I Don't Want to Get Up Today," by Seuss to an audience of eager listeners.

More than 15 guests presented a variety of literature to all grades. Teachers also paired their classes for book sharing. Mrs. Carter, school librarian, visited each class to read a special book.

To top off the celebration, the PES Parent Teacher Organization provided popcorn and served birthday cake made by Patti Gaines.

When asked what she enjoyed the most about Read Across America Day, fifth grader Kayla Partridge responded, "I didn't have a favorite thing. They were all fun!"

Ashley Weems said her favorite thing was when her mother, sixth grade teacher Mrs. Weems, "came in as Amelia Bedelia."

Mrs. Carter enjoyed hearing guest reader Mr. Savage share symbolism with the elementary students.

Miss Bowlin, third-grade teacher, said the students "were captivated by the stories shared by our guests."

Mackenzie Young said her favorite part of the day was, "The yummy cake!"
