PES class wins pizza party
Students in Linda Wetta's fourth grade class at Peabody Elementary School earned a pizza party Wednesday for being the top collectors in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Pennies for Patients" program.
The class raised $186.81 to earn the pizza party. All PES classes raised money Feb. 16-27 to collect a total of $869.55.
The project was led by members of the Peabody-Burns High School National Honor Society as a community service project for the organization.
The national community service project was introduced to the PES student body by the high school honor society members during an all-school assembly.
Students were given the challenge to raise money to help find cures for cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Money raised also will be used to provide information and support to patients and families.
Several National Honor society members and sponsor Katie Pankratz joined the fourth grade class to enjoy the pizza reward.
"We hope to expand the project to the high school next year," Pankratz said. "This was the service project that we chose with a national focus. We try to do three projects a year to help kids give back to the community and the world around them."
Fourth students earning the party were Kenny Battle, Caleb Charles, Javen Everett, Zachary Goodwin, Harvey Hammann, Matthew Hiebert, Sarah Hofkamp, April Kasper, Brody Kyle, Bethanny Loucks, Tiffany Miller, Amanda Pickens, Jacob Smith, and Mikayla Winter.
The class is sponsored by parent assistant Becky Nickel.
