Peabody woman's photo wins second place in contest

Myrna Wood of Peabody has enjoyed taking photographs for years. She records family events, the changing seasons, holidays, and anything else that strikes her fancy.

Wood woke up Sunday morning to find one of her photos reproduced in the "Outdoor" section of The Wichita Eagle. The picture took second place in the adult division of the 2004 Great Outdoors Photo Contest.

The picture, titled "Quiet Moment," was taken at twilight at the Peabody Country Club. A campfire burns brightly in the foreground while Tod Henderson and his mother Pat sit in silhouette at the edge of the lake.

They were remembering their brother and son, Craig White, who died several years ago in an accident with a loaded gun as he was camping at the club lake.

"It was the anniversary of Craig's death,' said Wood, "and we had gone out to the country club to the place where he always camped.

"Tod and Pat were by the lake reminiscing and I took the picture."

Wood said that when she took the film to be developed in Newton, Janet Post waited on her and encouraged her to enter the photo in the contest.

"I only did it because she encouraged me to," said Wood.

Wood said she was contacted Feb. 15 by Eagle Outdoor editor Michael Pearce. He told her the picture had been selected by Eagle photographers as one of 20 to be judged by the public at the Kansas Sports, Boat, and Travel Show at the Kansas Coliseum.

More than 250 photographs were entered in the contest that had a youth category as well as adult category.

"The voting ended Saturday," said Wood. "No one called and we didn't know until we saw it Sunday morning in the paper. I was pretty excited. Actually I was excited to make the top 20."

Wood and the other winners will share in $2,500 worth of prizes. The winning photographs may be viewed online through March 14 by going to www.kansas.com and clicking on "Outdoors."
