Peabody teens make a difference, hold garage sale

Paige Barnes recently enlisted the help of her friend Traylee Woodruff to make a difference in the lives of others. During a class on current events, the two Peabody girls heard about the needs of women and children. They decided they could do something to help.

They organized a garage sale, sending fliers around Peabody-Burns Junior High School and encouraging teachers and students to donate items for the sale. Paige chose to give the money from the sale to Catholic Charities Harbor House in Wichita.

"One of our family members had experienced abuse," Paige's mother Jolonna Barnes said. "She received help and so Paige wanted to give something back and help others in that situation."

According to Teresa Kunze, Catholic Charities Director of Communications, the funds raised will make a difference to a woman in need of help.

"Though the money from the garage sale did not meet their expectations," said Kunz, "the girls learned about the act of giving of their time and talents for others in need.

"In all, they raised $131.53. This amount will provide at least one day of shelter, food, and counseling support for a woman fleeing domestic violence. It will help that woman and the people in her life.

Catholic Charities Harbor House was established in 1992 in Wichita to provide a safe place for women and their children who are fleeing abuse.
