Peabody slips off Radar s screen
Most people in Peabody probably don't know Jim Moore. Even the natives and long-time residents probably can't tell you who he is.
But he's been a community fixture for 23 years. He was in Peabody Friday for the last time. This week he is starting a new chapter in his life and won't be back in Peabody any time soon.
Moore has best been known in this area as "Radar," the United Parcel Service delivery man. He retired this past week from his job with UPS after 27 years, 23 of which were spent delivering packages to homes and businesses in Peabody and the surrounding countryside.
Radar got his nickname many years ago when he made a delivery to a clothing store in Cottonwood Falls, his wire-rimmed glasses peeking out from under a stocking cap. The owner's daughter saw him and exclaimed, "Look, Mommy, he looks just like Radar (on the television show "MASH")."
The name stuck and within weeks everyone on his delivery route began calling him Radar.
Moore's retirement will mean a new UPS driver learning the ropes and finding his way through the many branches of the Gaines, Nellans, Jones, and Baker families.
In the meantime the community will miss Moore's efficiency, his easy smile, and friendly banter.
