Peabody man sentenced in friend's killing
John Whitehurst, 25, formerly of Peabody, has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing a long time friend during a fistfight over a woman.
Whitehurst pleaded "no contest" to the charge of involuntary manslaughter. The crime took place Dec. 30, 2001, when Richard Dole, 29, of Newton, was killed in the fight.
Testimony revealed that Whitehurst and Keith Rains went to a south Newton home to confront Dole after seeing bruises on the face of Dole's former girlfriend and her daughter.
Witnesses said they observed Whitehurst delivering a punch that left Dole unconscious.
