Peabody issues water boil advisory
Fecal coliforma and/or E. coli bacteria were discovered in the City of Peabody test results of the water supply Sept. 1 through Sept. 30.
Although not required by the state at this time, water customers may wish to boil water before drinking.
According to City of Peabody Administrator Jeff Benbrook, the city is obligated by law to give notice to the public within 24 hours of the time the bacteria is discovered through tests.
The testing results were received by the city and notice was given to the public. Water testing will be done more often.
Bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source (for example, following heavy rains). It can happen due to a break in the distribution system (pipes) or a failure in the water treatment process.
