Peabody is a golf hot spot
Just in case you missed it, I'd like to say something about Peabody getting its name Sunday in the Wichita Eagle. We were mentioned in the sports section. Did you see it? Our sand greens golf course, Lakeside Country Club, was listed at number 18 in an article about 50 "Things to Do, Places to Go in Kansas Sports." Imagine that!
We were right up there with the Knute Rockne crash site, 6A high school basketball tournament at Emporia, Allen Field House at KU, Quivira National Wildlife Refuge near Stafford, and the annual pancake race at Liberal. Yessssss!
I must admit that since it isn't Jayhawk basketball season, I rarely look at the sports section and if The Mister spied the two-page spread he didn't mention it to me. Pam Lamborn, Chief Rabbit at Jackrabbit Hollow, brought me up to snuff Monday morning with the declaration that she has in fact played a couple of rounds of golf at the now-famous course. Since she is a former physical education instructor I can only assume she is well on her way to visiting or competing in the remaining 49 Kansas sports hot spots. Phys-ed people are like that. I'll let you know how it goes.
I am not any kind of an athlete. I admit that right up front. But I have been to one of the sights noted in the article. When the Married Daughter attended Southwestern College she played basketball and volleyball in Stewart Field House, mentioned as the oldest college gym west of the Mississippi, still being used for its original purpose. At that time the black cat named Jinx was present at all athletic functions, unlike the current Jinx pictured in the Eagle, who is banned from attendance.
I will not be in competition with the Chief Rabbit trying to conquer the remaining highlighted sports stops. I might, however, wander out to Lakeside Country Club and look it over. Can you believe I have never been there? How about you?
At any rate it was nice to get our name in the Eagle for something positive following the deadly accidents on U.S.-50 and the notoriety with which we were saddled by virtue of our close proximity to the crash sites.
And that is a topic for another day.
