Peabody Historical Society plans Christmas program
Several years ago, Joan Berns had a brilliant idea — why not do Peabody at Christmas time each decade? People have been asking, "Did we miss the historical society's downtown walk last year?"
No, the great re-creation of the State Fair of 1885 took all the efforts of the group last year, but do plan to visit Peabody this year during the Thanksgiving holidays.
Each museum board member has a decade, or even two, to plan scenes that might have occurred in Peabody at that time.
Muriel Wolfersperger plans to remember the very early days when very few children were in Peabody, in fact, to remember the first child born here! She also remembers when the first free library in Kansas was the cultural center of the community. She even brings back the very first librarian.
Janet Hamous has researched when the first electrical lights were used at Christmas time, just after the turn of the century. These scenes, and many others, will take place in the business houses of Peabody.
Sadly, 130 years of history will not allow each scene to be placed just where it occurred, but the actors and actresses of the community will transport visitors back in time, regardless of the setting.
Plan to entertain your family and friends with a guided tour of Peabody's past on the Friday or Saturday nights following Thanksgiving. Tours will start at the Carnegie Library basement each evening at 6 p.m. and a new tour starts every 20 minutes.
Proceeds from the tours support the Peabody Historical Society projects and the maintenance of the museum complex.
