Peabody Girl Scouts play host to Girl Guides

Peabody Girl Scouts recently played host to a group of Girl Guides, leaders, and family members from East Grinstead, West Sussex, England.

The English visitors arrived Aug. 3 with local families serving as hosts. Activities enjoyed while in the Peabody area were an ice cream sundae party, Goessel Threshing Days, and a swim party. Host families also enjoyed many outings sharing their family life with guests.

The Peabody Girl Scouts and East Grinstead Guides have had an international link since 1996 when the Peabody scouts attended an international camp at Ardingly, West Sussex. That was the beginning of a long and happy friendship which is still going strong.

The Guides visited Peabody in 1998 and attended the Prairie Winds Jamboree at Marion County Lake. The Scouts then returned to East Grinstead for a visit in 2001 and attended international camp.

The scouts and guides left Aug. 9 on a five-day trip to Estes Park, Colo. The group of 38 enjoyed hiking in the Rockies and exploring Rocky Mountain National Park. The Girl Guides also were able to go whitewater rafting near Estes Park. A farewell barbecue was held Aug. 17 at the home of Mary and Shreves Avery.

"A Scout's Own" ceremony was held with the theme of international friendship. The evening closed with sparklers celebrating friendship.
