Peabody city plans fall cleanup week

Peabody city officials have designated the last week in September as fall cleanup week.

From 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 26-30 and 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 1, there will be a manned roll-off Dumpster at First and Olive streets to accept trash from city residents.

People delivering items to the Dumpster must show a water bill stub or driver's license as the service only is available to city residents.

Tires will be accepted but there will be a charge of $3 each. No yard waste or demolition material (cement, lumber, siding, Sheetrock, or fencing) will be accepted at this site or at curbside pickup.

Curbside pickup will take place on Friday of cleanup week.

"Citizens may begin placing items at the curb on Sept. 25 if they wish," said Stephanie Ax, city treasurer. "However, everyone needs to remember there is a new regulation this time. All trash at curbside must be in a bag, box, or tied in a bundle.

"The crews will no longer pickup items just thrown in a pile."

According to Ax metal items should be separated from other items as they will picked up by a different truck and crew.

Appliances also should be set to the side. Bulky items such as sofas or other furniture should be called in to the city office so extra employees will be available to pick them up.

Refrigerators and air conditioners must be called in as appliances using refrigerants are specially tagged for disposal. All freezers and refrigerators must have doors removed.

Hazardous waste should be delivered to the mobile collection unit from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 1 at First and Vine streets.

Those with questions about items to be picked up or people wishing to make arrangements for special pickup should call the city building at 983-2174.
