Peabody-Burns superintendent receives contract extension

Peabody-Burns USD 398 superintendent Tom Alstrom received a one-year extension to his contract at the Jan. 8 school board meeting. Alstrom's contract extension puts him at the helm of the Peabody-Burns schools through the end of the 2007-08 school year. A salary offer will be made later. The motion to retain Alstrom passed unanimously.

In other business related to personnel, the board accepted the resignation of band and vocal director Jack Coleman, entered four executive sessions to discuss non-elected personnel with no action taken on return to open meeting, reviewed a letter of intent for interest-based bargaining negotiations between the board and faculty association, and tabled for legal input a decision on certified personnel serving in a volunteer coaching capacity.

In addition the board:

— scheduled a special meeting at 8 a.m. Jan. 15 at the central office.

— conducted an executive session for the purpose of discussing the acquisition of property. No action was taken on return to open meeting.

— discussed concerns related to junior and senior high first semester grading in band and vocal classes. The issue was tabled for additional information from legal council until the special meeting Jan. 15.

— approved overnight trips for Business Professionals of America officers to Topeka Jan. 9-10 and to the state leadership conference Feb. 14-17, providing sponsor meals and lodging.

— heard a TEEN technology conference report from Gary Nesser and a PowerPoint presentation by FFA members Bayleigh Clark, Jessica Gillet, and Stephanie Rempel about their trip Oct. 24-29 to the National FFA Conference in Indianapolis, Ind.

— heard a review of district testing results by Katie Pankratz, Peabody-Burns Junior and Senior High School counselor.

— was reminded of the joint meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 with the board of Marion County Special Education Cooperative. The meeting will be held in Florence at the gymnasium.

— also was reminded of the 5:30 p.m. board retreat March 6 at the HUB.
