Peabody-Burns Lady Warriors place fourth in tournament

The Peabody-Burns Lady Warriors spent last week in tournament play at Berean Academy. Placing fourth in the Eli J. Walter Tournament, the Lady Warriors defeated Goessel, but lost to Douglass and Wichita Collegiate.

Both the Lady Warriors and the Warriors will get back into league play at home Tuesday against Burrton and Friday they will travel to Elbing to meet Berean Academy.

For the third time this season, the Lady Warriors met up with the Lady Bluebirds of Goessel. A fired-up PBHS squad enjoyed good team play, scoring 17 points in the first quarter. Andrea Jones scored first from underneath. Defensively, Jones and Gretchen Berns combined to control the boards.

Points from Leah Eldridge, Shelby Plummer, Jana Windsor, Casey Berger, Jones, and Berns gave the PBHS women a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 17-11.

Good scoring in the second quarter gave the Lady Warriors a 34-22 edge at half time. An early second half run by the Lady Bluebirds got them to within eight at the end of the third quarter. Only scoring five points in the third, the PBHS squad had a smaller lead, 38-30.

Pulling away in the fourth, the Lady Warriors put the game away. A good team win for the PBHS squad put them into the winner's bracket to meet Douglass on Thursday.

Game two against Douglass was another good team effort by the Lady Warriors. A long two by Dalli Hammond started the scoring for the PBHS squad.

A good quarter of the ball handling and control of the boards helped the Lady Warriors to a first quarter lead of 15-9.

An abundance of fouls for both teams slowed the game in the second quarter. Free throws were recorded by Hammond, Andrea Jones, Gretchen Berns, and Jana Windsor. The Lady Warriors took a 26-21 lead to the locker room at the half.

The third quarter's scoring was started by Leah Eldridge with a lay-up. Douglass tied the game at 29-all early in the third. The Lady Warriors continued to play catch-up for the remainder of the game.

A very physical contest, many of the Lady Warriors carried four fouls and Jones fouled out the fourth. The PBHS squad fought hard, but lost a tough contest, 55-61.

Turnovers plagued the Lady Warriors in the third game against Wichita Collegiate. The Lady Spartans held the Lady Warriors to only three points in the first quarter, a two by Andrea Jones and a free-throw from Shelby Plummer.

Dalli Hammond lead the Lady Warriors in the second quarter with seven points. They were down by 14 at the half, 15-29.

Reserves on the roster played some in the game to give the starters some rest. The second half was better in point production, but the turnovers continued and made it difficult to sustain any momentum.

The Lady Warriors were defeated by Wichita Collegiate, 55-34, placing fourth in the tournament.
