Peabody-Burns FFA members have busy week
Peabody-Burns FFA chapter members were busy this past week setting the standard for the remainder of the semester.
Members traveled to Chapman High School Feb. 16 to participate in a leadership conference featuring former National FFA officer Barret Keene, a student at the University of Florida majoring in agricultural education.
Keene spoke to the students about many topics, all based on the fact that life is a jungle. PBHS students Naomi Coe, Leila Garoutte, Amber Langenegger, Brandon Marple, Stephanie Pratt, Pricilla Partridge, Jessica Slater, and Leann Spinden, returned from the conference inspired to face the jungle of life.
Five members competed Feb. 18 in the South Central District entomology career development event in Marion. Those participating were Derek Benson, Leila Garoutte, Jessica Slater, Leann Spinden, and Michael Unruh. They identified 50 insects and completed a test over an assortment of insect information. The team finished one point shy of third place and came home with the fourth place plaque. They were led by Michael Unruh, who was high point individual in the contest.
As the week came to an end, local FFA members participated in the South Central District Community Service Day. They traveled Saturday to Sedgwick County Zoo. Along with approximately 100 fellow FFA members, they completed various tasks assigned by zoo officials including sweeping sand and salt off the main road around the zoo, painting an assortment of graphics in the reptile and amphibian center, completing numerous horticultural activities, and other assorted tasks.
After their tasks were completed, students had time to walk through the zoo to enjoy the animals and their surroundings. Local FFA members participating in Community Service Day were Naomi Coe, Leila Garoutte, Pricilla Partridge, Stephanie Pratt, Jessica Slater, Amber Spechtenhauser, and Leann Spinden.
