Peabody-Burns board offers added assignments, compensation
Additional supplemental assignments and substitute certificates, as well as compensation for administrators serving the district during the absence of Mary Brown, were approved Sept. 12 at Peabody-Burns board of education meeting.
Emergency substitute certificates were granted to Leona Griffith, Verna Unruh, and Jerry Nelson.
Additional supplemental contracts were approved for Brenda Riggs as sophomore class sponsor, Jonathan Richstatter as assistant baseball coach, Roger O'Neal as assistant junior high volleyball coach, and Steven Glover as director of the school musical production.
Following a 15-minute executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel, unanimous approval was given to compensate superintendent Tom Alstrom and high school building administrator Ray Savage for the extra duties they perform due to the absence of high school principal Mary Brown who is recovering from heart surgery.
Each of the administrators will receive a half day of vacation for each week he spends performing additional duties at the high school.
The board also approved a request for early graduation from Jade Garcia.
The monthly board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Burns Community Center.
In other business the board:
— toured Peabody Elementary building and play ground.
— approved payroll in the amount of $118,106.49, and warrants in the amounts of $12,502.11 and $374,917.07.
— heard a request from Brian Simmonds to bring back as a future agenda item consideration of a senior class trip based on merit.
— heard a presentation by Jesse Riggs and Megan Cox about Business Professionals of America national competition in May at Anaheim, Calif. Competition for the 2005-06 school year will be in Orlando, Fla.
— approved a request for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America members to attend a Nov. 18-20 cluster meeting in Louisville, Ky. The board voted to provide $388 to cover transportation/hotel cost and registration for the sponsor and meals for two members for three days.
— approved a request for additional funding to Communities in Schools making the total district contribution $1,834 for the 2005-06 school year.
— determined a special meeting will be held at 9 a.m. Jan. 7, 2006, for the superintendent's evaluation and contract offering.
— approved seeking bids for the purchase of a 53-passenger school bus.
— reviewed mileage, fuel consumption, and related costs for district buses, Suburbans, and vans during the 2004-05 school year. Members also were told a request had gone out to district staff about possible reduction in travel due to increased fuel prices.
— approved selection of Peggy Phillips as board delegate to Kansas Association of School Boards convention Dec. 2-4 at Overland Park. Information about the convention and a fall regional meeting was disbursed.
— board members, superintendent, and high school administrator entered two executive sessions for the purpose of discussing personnel. Parents and a student were included in a portion of the meetings. No action was taken on return to open meeting.
