Peabody awarded grant for strategic plan

The city was notified last week that its application for a Community Capacity grant to fund a strategic plan for the community had been accepted by the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. The grant is in the amount of $15,000.

The funds will pay the cost of creating a long term plan for future development in the areas of infrastructure, housing, health care, education, recreation, and economic development.

"The idea behind the strategic plan is to have something in place as a guide for future decision making," said Joanna Brazil, who helped put the grant application together. Brazil is the manager of the Peabody Main Street program.

"City council members will come and go, as will school board or economic development members," she said. "By having a plan for all facets of the community, individual boards or groups won't be re-inventing the wheel every time something needs to be done in Peabody."

Peabody will receive one of nine Community Capacity grants. The state will provide $128,000 in grants for planning or implementation projects in the selected towns or counties.
