PBHS Warriors lose first contest of season

Peabody-Burns High School Warriors lost the season home opener Friday. Berean Academy defeated the PBHS squad, 63-53.

The team will now be in tournament play with games at home and on the road. They will take on Caldwell Tuesday at home. Thursday is a match-up at Oxford and Friday, the Warriors will play Berean at Berean.

The team opened the game with Berean putting up the first score of the contest. PBHS Warrior Aaron Burnett scored first with a short outside jump shot to get the home team on the scoreboard. The Warriors trailed for the first four minutes. Trevor Hamm scored a jumper to put the PBHS squad in front, 6-5. The Warrior lead at the end of the first quarter was three, 14-11. Duane Unruh had six, and Burnett and Hamm had four each.

PBHS took control in the second quarter with the rotation of 10 players throughout the period. Warrior defense forced several key turnovers and held Berean to 10 points. Warrior offense chalked up 17 and took a 10-point lead to the locker room at the half. Derrick Simmonds and Hamm had four points each. Jacob Simmonds added a trey. Burnett, Unruh, and Todd Woodruff contributed two each.

Early in the third, the Berean squad put more pressure on the home team and created scoring opportunities on the PBHS mistakes. Berean offense found a rhythm and also shot well from the free-throw line to put up 19 points. PBHS relinquished the lead late in the period, but Nathan Bishop scored a trey to put the Warriors up by one, 39-39. PBHS had the three-point lead at the end of the period, 43-40. Bishop led the scoring with seven. Simmonds added a trey and Woodruff had two.

PBHS came undone in the fourth with Berean controlling the tempo and the charity line. Early in the period, Berean took the lead and PBHS only could get as close as four before Berean pulled away for the 63-53 win. Fourth quarter scoring included a trey by Adam Benson. Burnett, Unruh, and Hamm added two each. Simmonds put in a free throw.
