PBHS students attend business expo
Seven students from the Peabody-Burns High School BPA chapter attended the 2008 National Leadership conference, "Find Your Fit," May 7-11 at Reno, Nev.
Ben Eldridge, Seth Methvin, Christiane Wendt, Sean Jones, Jacob Simmonds, Martin Hofkamp, and Embry Hodges joined more than 6,000 conference delegates participating in national-level skill competitions, listening to industry speakers, and elected next year's national officer team.
All members attended the opening session listening to nationally known speaker Donna Hartley, who spoke about identifying and obtaining dreams. She encouraged the students to act and think positively.
Seth Methvin placed third in prepared speech. In this event, the student selects a business topic and prepares a five to seven-minute speech. Methvin spoke about the agri-tourism industry.
Christiane Wedel was sixth in medical office procedures. During this competition, students take an objective test over medical terminology and complete an application piece such as keyboarding and editing a medical record file.
Ben Eldridge and Methvin, both state officers, served as voting delegates for the state chapter. They participated in a campaign rally, listening to campaign speeches and voting in a caucus selection.
Other competitors included Sean Jones, entrepreneurship; Jacob Simmonds, spreadsheet analysis; Martin Hofkamp, financial math; and Embry Hodges, medical office procedures.
The group enjoyed a tour of the Lake Tahoe area and other activities.
They earned money for the trip by catering a scholarship banquet, participating in the citywide garage sale, and selling bierrocks and baked goods at Vocational Day.
Jana Wedel, BPA sponsor, and Brian Simmonds accompanied the students.
