Peabody-Burns High School Warriors defeated the Sterling Black Bears Friday 17-10.

The Warrior offense took the opening kickoff and put together a 60-yard scoring drive.

Nathan Bishop had a 33-yard run that earned a new set of downs. On second-and-13, Derek Benson moved the sticks again with a 14-yard reception.

On first-and-goal at the Black Bear nine-yard line, Bishop ran on first and second downs to set up third-and-goal at the three.

Todd Woodruff called his own number and scampered to the right side for the score. William Pratt added the PAT and the Warriors led 7-0 with eight minutes, 12 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Warrior defense took to the field and forced a three-and-out. The Black Bear punter couldn't get the kick off and Mike Gfeller pinned the punter at his own 21-yard line.

On the next play, the Warriors struck quickly with a pass from Woodruff to Micah Hilliard for a touchdown.

Pratt added the extra point, and with 6:22 left in the first period, PBHS led 14-0.

The Warriors held Sterling scoreless in the first quarter with stops from Ben Eldridge, Nick Abramowich, Woodruff, Benson, Anthony Jones, Ryan Johnson, Bishop, Hilliard, Derrick Simmonds, Eric Dutton, and Trevor Hamm.

Late in the first quarter the Black Bears intercepted a Warrior pass. They put together a long drive for a score that came with 8:38 left until halftime, to cut the lead to 14-7.

PBHS moved the ball 50 yards on the next series but the drive ended with a fumble that was recovered by Sterling. The Black Bears then threw an interception to Simmonds to give the ball back to the Warriors.

PBHS went to work at the Black Bear 46-yard line.

Woodruff ran the ball on two downs and Hilliard kept the drive alive with two receptions to put the ball at the Black Bear 17.

The drive ended with a field goal attempt from Pratt. He connected from 22 yards out to make the halftime score 17-7 PBHS.

Defense held strong the rest of the first half with big plays from Simmonds with a key pass break, and from Dutton and Abramowich who recorded a sack each.

The Warrior defense was just as tough in the second half.
