PBHS Lady Warriors fall to Berean

Peabody-Burns High School Lady Warriors lost their season-opener Friday to the Berean Academy Lady Warriors, 52-45.

In the first quarter of play the Lady Warriors took control and jumped ahead, 7-2. Berean added another basket, but PBHS held a three-point edge at the end of the period. Elaina Newell led the scoring with three points. Traci Windsor and Jessi Hilliard had two each.

Berean took over in the second and scored 14 points. The Lady Warriors had five points, but trailed 18-12 at halftime. Windsor had four points and Newell added a free throw.

PBHS trailed again in the third, adding 10 points while Berean scored 12. Hilliard had five, Racquel Castillo hit a three-pointer, and Jessica Gillet put in two points, as PBHS trailed 30-22 heading into the fourth.

PBHS got to within two of Berean at 37-35, with four minutes left in the game. Berean took advantage in the middle and from the free throw line and claimed the seven-point victory.

Hilliard led the team with 18 points alone in the fourth quarter, while Newell had four and Becky Morris had a one.

Morris led the team with six rebounds, Laura Hoffman had five, and Newell had four.

Newell recorded four steals, while Hilliard and Windsor had three each.

"It was a good first game for us," head coach Darren Schroeder said. "It definitely showed us our strengths and weaknesses."
